This Is Not a Lamp
This Is Not a Lamp is a table light sculpture dedicated to the impact of human civilization on the environment. The project was inspired by greenhouse gas emissions and the consequences of industrial production, while its name refers to René Magritte’s famous work The Treachery of Images and its statement “This is not a pipe.” A similar paradox is used here: the object is not simply a lamp, but an artistic statement in which light becomes a language for exploring the relationship between humanity and the planet.
The composition functions as a symbolic model of the world around us. A circular light source at the center represents human civilization, while the light radiating from it demonstrates its influence on different elements of the natural environment.
The glass hemisphere symbolizes the atmosphere, while a textured glass element with a water-like surface represents the world’s oceans. Light passes through, reflects, and refracts within these materials, creating an expressive luminous pattern on the surface below that symbolically extends the impact of civilization to the soil.
Reflected light plays a central role in the design. The luminous flux is directed upward and reflected by the circular upper element, whose underside is finished in a light color to maximize reflection. The light then diffuses softly downward and around the object, creating comfortable additional illumination suitable even for reading.
The textured glass generates patterns on a table or pedestal reminiscent of sunlight reflected from water. This gives the project another emotional dimension: while addressing the fragility of the environment, it also evokes calm associations with the sea, travel, and natural light.
To create a sense of weightlessness, the reflective element is supported by the transparent glass surface, while the metal base has a mirror-like finish. Reflections visually dissolve parts of the structure and make individual elements appear to float.
Sustainable design principles are an essential part of the project. The object consists of several components placed together without glue or complex permanent fasteners. This makes it easier to disassemble and separate the main materials for future recycling. Glass and metal are used as the principal materials, while compact packaging helps reduce the resources required for transportation.
A replaceable lamp is used instead of a completely integrated light source. This solution can extend the potential life of the product and allows users to choose lighting characteristics according to their needs.
This Is Not a Lamp combines environmental awareness, product design, and light art. Light performs not only a practical function but becomes the main artistic material, making the relationship between human activity and the surrounding world visible.
